BATTELLE TO RECEIVE PRESTIGIOUS EDISON AWARD FROM OHIO GOVERNOR BOB TAFT

Columbus, Ohio--Battelle will receive the 2005 Thomas Edison Award from Ohio Governor Bob Taft at a ceremony today in Columbus.

The Edison Award honors a corporation or organization that has utilized technology to impact not only its own operations, but also the quality of life in its community, the state of Ohio, and around the world. Procter & Gamble, Rubbermaid, General Electric, and the NASA Glenn Research Center are among past recipients.

"Each year, through the Edison Award, the state recognizes a world-class Ohio organization for global leadership in technological innovation, and I am honored to recognize Battelle," said Governor Taft. "For more than 75 years, Battelle has thrived on innovation, working with private industry and government to create new products and technologies and improve quality of life for citizens in Ohio and across the nation."

"We are tremendously honored to accept the 2005 Edison Award," said Battelle President and CEO Carl Kohrt. "The criteria valued by the Edison Award mirror Battelle's commitment to use science and technology to solve significant global and national problems and to have a positive impact in the communities where we live and work."

The Edison Award is named for Thomas Edison, the Ohio native who invented the light bulb, among other things.

Kohrt will accept the award on Battelle's behalf during this evening's ceremony at the Ohio Historical Society in Columbus. The program will include other presentations, including an Emerging Technology Award to Velocys, Inc., which was formed by Battelle as a standalone subsidiary in 2001. Velocys is developing a new technology that uses microchannel reactors and highly active, nano-scale catalysts to reduce costs in the chemical and energy industries

Battelle is a global leader in science and technology. Headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, it develops and commercializes technology and manages laboratories for customers. Battelle, with the national labs that it manages or co-manages, oversees 19,000 staff members and conducts $3.3 billion in annual research and development. Battelle innovations include the development of the office copier machine (Xerox), pioneering work on compact disc technology, and medical technology advancements.
