BATTELLE EXPANDS HAZARDOUS MATERIALS RESEARCH FACILITY
West Jefferson, OH--An expansion to Battelle's Hazardous Materials Research Facility (HMRC) nearly doubled the size of the facility, which has been devoted to chemical defense testing since 1981.
The $5 million facility expansion was officially opened today in a ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house. Ground was broken in April of 2005 for the 14,000 square-foot expansion which now gives researchers and technicians 30,000 square feet of office and laboratory space.
This new state of the art facility continues Battelle's commitment to protection of workers and the environment by incorporating multiple redundant safety features in the facility design and construction.
About 60 people work at the HMRC and the expansion allows for future staff growth, initially estimated at about 20 more staff members, as well as new testing opportunities.
The HMRC, which is the largest commercial facility in the U.S. for chemical agent testing, performs about $10 million annually in research work for the U.S. military and first responders in the following general areas:
"This expansion will allow us to provide our customers the additional services and capabilities that are desperately needed in the industry," said Marty Toomajian, Battelle's VP for Chemical and Advanced Materials Science. "We've got more space for our staff to perform this vital work in a safe and efficient manner."
