BATTELLE DEDICATES NEW FACILITY FOR RESEARCH INTO ENERGETIC MATERIALS AND HIGH SPEED EVENTS

West Jefferson, OH--Battelle officially dedicated a new facility today at its High Energy Research Laboratory Area that will give it expanded capabilities to conduct research into materials such as armor. The laboratory also conducts extensive research into energetic materials such as explosives and propellants and into high-speed events requiring exceptionally fast data capture equipment.

The 12,500 square-foot facility was constructed over the last eight months. Together with other building and infrastructure improvements the total cost is about $2.5 million.

The new building will give researchers improved meeting and research space, instrumentation labs, and storage facilities and staging areas for setting up experiments before moving them into one of the several test chambers at the facility. Other improvements include an updated fiber optic backbone, storage and changing areas for safety equipment and upgraded chemical lab and storage facilities.

Battelle has conducted explosives-related research for the Department of Defense for more than 40 years and more recently for the Transportation Security Administration and the Department of Homeland Security. The research has contributed to advances in armor development, blast mitigation and explosives detection systems and technology.

"This expansion allows us to enhance the research capabilities we offer our clients," said Neal Owens, VP of Energetic Systems and Security Technologies for Battelle. "We play a key role in advancing the science and technology supporting armor, explosives detection and mitigation systems, and other defensive technologies. This area of research has become increasingly important for our military and for civilian populations as part of the global war on terrorism."

Battelle is a global leader in science and technology. Headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, it develops and commercializes technology and manages laboratories for customers. Battelle, with the national labs it manages or co-manages, oversees 20,000 staff members and conducts $3.4 billion in annual research and development. Battelle innovations have included the development of the office copier machine (Xerox); pioneering work on compact disc technology; fiber optics for telecommunications; new medical products to fight diabetes, cancer and heart disease; breakthroughs in environmental waste treatment; homeland security technologies; and advancements in transportation safety and security.
