BATTELLE DUXBURY HONORED FOR WETLANDS RESTORATION PROJECT

Duxbury, MA--Battelle recently received an award from the Coastal America Partnership for its participation in a team effort to help restore the site of a former drive-in movie theater to wetlands.

"We're grateful to be recognized for our efforts as part of a team, but the real satisfaction comes from knowing we played a role in protecting our coastal resources," said Lisa Lefkovitz, a Battelle Program Manager who accepted the award for Battelle. "This project is a good example of how underutilized, incompatible development can be replaced by a sustainable and compatible land use."

Located in Lincoln, Rhode Island, Lonsdale Marsh Restoration Project was identified through a comprehensive watershed evaluation of ecological restoration opportunities in the Blackstone River Watershed. The intent was to restore and link key habitats to enhance overall watershed functioning.

The project involved the restoration of 17 acres of habitat by removing the former drive-in theater and transforming the asphalt site into a wetland. The site now has 10 acres of riparian habitat, and seven acres of wetland with 3.6 acres of emergent and open water habitat and 3.4 acres of shrub and forested swamp.

The Coastal America Partnership, established in 1992, integrates federal, state, and local governments with non-governmental entities to protect, preserve, and restore coastal watersheds. It recognizes outstanding partnerships through its national awards program. The Lonsdale Wetlands Restoration Team is one of six projects recognized this year. The Awards program works in conjunction with the Corporate Wetlands Restoration Partnership, a program that allows private companies to make voluntary donations of funds or in-kind services to a non-profit organization. These funds or in-kind services are then used, at the company's direction, to help support coastal habitat restoration or public education programs.
