Demands made by customers of Woodbine Chemical of Medina, Ohio, are benefitting the environment and soybean farmers.

Woodbine recently introduced "SOYL," a soybean-based, all natural hand cleaner. The industrial strength, antimicrobial hand cleaner was co-developed by Woodbine and Jim Browning, a research scientist at Battelle.

"Woodbine is the manufacturer of Pow'rKleen Medicated Hand Cleaner," Browning said. "Their customers in the automotive and industrial markets began demanding a cleaner that was more environmentally friendly. They wanted a cleaner that did not contain hydrocarbons or mineral spirits. That's when they approached Battelle." Browning developed SOYL by combining a mixture of soy oil, fibril, surfactants, conditioners, and an antimicrobial agent, PCMX. SOYL is a concentrated, water-activated cleaner that utilizes micro-emulsion detergents and fibril, a natural cellulose scrubber.

The product is 100 percent biodegradable.

"I think you're going to see a big demand for this product," Browning said. "Companies are becoming more and more environmentally conscious in all aspects of their business. Woodbine saw a need and went after it." "Not only is it biodegradable, but this opens up another market for soybean farmers."
