Battelle will host the first-ever International Conference on Remediation of Chlorinated and Recalcitrant Compounds at the Doubletree & Marriott Hotels/Monterey Conference Center in Monterey, Calif., May 18-21.
The conference is sponsored by Battelle and co-sponsored by Biotreatment News, EnviroMetal Technologies Inc., Fluor Daniel GTI, the Gas Research Institute, McClellan National Test Site, OHM Remediation Services Corp., and Parsons Engineering Science Inc.
The conference will focus on remediation of sites contaminated with chlorinated and other recalcitrant compounds, such as:
"We really need to bring together scientists and engineers from many disciplines to discuss the environmental fate and transport of these compounds, their true effects on human health and ecological systems, and the potential for established and emerging remediation technologies to reduce potential exposure and associated risks in a timely and cost-effective manner," said Dr. Godage B. Wickramanayake, research leader and program manager in Battelle's Environmental Restoration Department, who is serving as the conference chairman. "That is why Battelle is taking the initiative in sponsoring and organizing the conference."
The technical program will consist of more than 500 platform and poster presentations organized into nearly 50 sessions. Topics to be covered include physical, chemical, biological, thermal, and combined remediation technologies; remediation and contaminants; natural attenuation processes and case studies; site characterization and monitoring technologies; human health and ecological risk assessment; regulatory issues and technology acceptance; and resource allocation and cost issues.
The Conference World Wide Web page, located at www.battelle.org/conferen.htm, lists the technical sessions and chairs.
Organizations that conduct remediation activities or supply equipment used in such work are invited to exhibit at the conference. Exhibits will be on display in an area adjacent to the technical program activities for the duration of the conference.
The conference will be a biennial event and will alternate with Battelle's successful In Situ and On-Site Bioremediation Symposium. The fourth Bioremediation Symposium was held in April in New Orleans. The fifth symposium will be held in San Diego in April 1999.
