BATTELLE STUDY SETS BASELINE FOR USE OF SOY INKS

Battelle has completed the first life-cycle analysis on the use of soy-based inks. The study will be used as a baseline for future comparisons of other soy inks and traditional petroleum-based inks.

The study was jointly funded by the Iowa Soybean Promotion Board and the Illinois Soybean Checkoff Board.

The life-cycle analysis, headed by Battelle researcher Duane Tolle, was a cradle-to-grave analysis of the resources and energy used and environmental releases, and an assessment of the potential environmental impacts of a sheet-fed printing process using soy ink. Soy ink uses the oil of the soybean to replace some of the petroleum-based products in traditional ink. According to the Battelle study:

"This will be a benchmark for all future comparisons of other inks," Tolle said. With the assistance of the Graphic Arts Technical Foundation and others in the industry, researchers were able to develop a representative formula for soy-based black ink, which is the predominant ink color used. Five printers from different parts of the country, using SoySeal-certified soy ink, participated in the study. The study was the first to be approved under the International Organization of Standardization 14042 guidelines for life-cycle analysis.
