Bath Iron Works of Bath, Maine, and Battelle signed a Memorandum of Understanding Jan. 22 during a ceremony at Bath Iron Works. The memorandum focuses on combining the extensive research, development and testing resources of Battelle with the complementary design and shipbuilding domain expertise of Bath Iron Works. A..C. Cameron, President of Bath Iron Works and M. R. VanderLind, Executive Vice President of Defense Sectors at Battelle, signed the agreement. Bath Iron Works is a major supplier of surface ships for the U. S. Navy. Battelle, a world-recognized technology organization based in Columbus, Ohio, is manager in whole or part of three Department of Energy national laboratories - Pacific Northwest, Brookhaven and Renewable Energy. Officials from Bath Iron Works and Battelle concluded that collaboration would significantly advance insertion of innovative technologies into ongoing and future projects crucial to the success of the Navy's mission. Based on this decision, a more formal relationship was deemed necessary to meet these needs of the U. S. Navy and the nation. The results will be the introduction of innovative technologies into the fleet. The technologies will improve operational readiness well into the future while reducing the total ownership costs of fleet assets and supporting infrastructure for the surface forces of the U. S. Navy. Battelle, headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, focuses on technology development and commercialization and product development.
