NORTHWEST BIOTHERAPEUTICS, INC. AND BATTELLE ANNOUNCE PROSTATE CANCER COLLABORATION
Northwest Biotherapeutics, Inc. and Battelle, one of the
world's leading R&D organizations, announced today that they are forming a strategic collaboration
to commercialize a new generation of radio-pharmaceutical technology for prostate cancer.
Northwest Biotherapeutics and Battelle plan to apply Battelle's material science,radio-pharmaceutical, and healthcare product development core competencies and Northwest
Biotherapeutics' therapeutic product development and clinical trial expertise to commercialize a new
approach for treating early-stage prostate cancer. The approach consists of radioactive isotopes
delivered in phase-changing liquid polymers for infusion in prostate tissue rather than the use of
radiation-encased in metallic implants referred to as "seeds." This innovation is expected to simplify
the implantation of radiation in the prostate and should improve treatment efficacy by allowing the use
of a wider range of isotopes at safe yet more effective doses of radioactivity.
The American Cancer Society projects that 179,000 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed
in the U.S. this year, representing 29% of all newly diagnosed cases of cancer in American men.
Prostate cancer is expected to result in one male death every fourteen minutes and represents a
serious health threat for one out of every five males.
"This collaboration will formalize an exciting pre-existing relationship which has already yielded
promising preliminary data," said Daniel 0. Wilds, President and Chief Executive Officer, Northwest
Biotherapeutics. "This is a highly energized mutual effort with the goal of introducing an important
advance for the treatment of localized prostate cancer."
"Battelle's business is innovation," said Richard D. Rosen, Battelle Pharmaceutical and Medical
Products, Vice President and General Manager. "Our developing relationship with Northwest
Biotherapeutics is another example of our commitment to move technologies from the laboratory and
into products in the commercial marketplace. We are very enthusiastic about our evolving
relationship with Northwest Biotherapeutics to commercialize a new approach for prostate cancer
treatment." The technology underlying this novel therapy is based on research conducted at the
Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, which is managed by Battelle.
Northwest Biotherapeutics, Inc. is a Seattle, Washington, based company focused on developing and
commercializing products and services to improve care for prostate and other cancer patients. In
addition to its relationship with Battelle for localized prostate cancer, it is perfecting an
immunotherapy-based platform technology for treating a number of life-threatening types of cancer.
Battelle focuses on technology development, product development, technology commercialization,
and laboratory management. Headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, Battelle has annual revenues of
nearly $1 billion and more than 60 locations throughout the world.
