ZIVENA TO BEGIN PHASE II CLINICAL TRIALS TO TREAT LUNG CANCER

Columbus, Ohio--Zivena, Inc., an emerging specialty pharmaceutical company focused on oncology, announced today that it has determined, in a Phase I trial, the treatment dose of its lead product, ResmycinTM (doxorubicin HCl inhalation solution), and has extended the trial into patients with lung metastases from soft tissue sarcoma.

"We're pleased that Zivena has chosen to proceed with trials in soft tissue sarcoma," said Dr. John Murren of Yale University Medical Center, one of the major centers in the trial. "At Yale we have seen tumor response with Resmycin in soft tissue sarcoma patients during the Phase I trial, even in a patient who previously received doxorubicin by the intravenous route," he said.

"Most impressively, we believe that we are able to deliver higher concentrations of the chemotherapy drug to the lung than those achieved with standard doses given by the traditional intravenous route, but without many of the toxicities, like bone marrow suppression and hair loss," Murren said.

"Zivena has submitted a Phase II combination trial for review by several institutions for patients who have advanced non-small cell lung cancer," said Zivena President and CEO Dennis Cearlock. "That trial is designed to test Resmycin's effectiveness in first-line treatment with a current standard intravenous therapy combining the benefits of local and systemic treatment," he said. Zivena specializes in developing inhaled oncology drugs to treat lung cancer and cancer that has metastasized to the lungs.

Zivena is currently attempting to secure a series A round of financing and intends to use the proceeds to further its research program.
