CASE STUDIES & INNOVATIONS:

Battelle brings world-class expertise in explosives and energetics—from non-lethal to advanced munitions and weapons, and including counterterrorism, special operations, and aviation security technology.

OUR APPROACH

Combining a cross-section of scientific and engineering specialists who collaborate on innovative solutions in explosives and energetics, Battelle serves as a trusted partner, providing a range of services—from research and development and rapid prototyping to testing and evaluation. Our services in explosives and energetics are supported by government-approved facilities. For defense, homeland security clients, Battelle also provides explosive ordnance disposal (EOD), physical security and force protection, aviation security, and counterterrorism and special operations support.

Core competencies in explosives and energetics include:

  • Advanced specialty munitions and weapons— design, modeling, analysis, development, rapid prototyping, testing and evaluation, with emphasis on innovative, low-cost munitions, non-lethal and low collateral damage munitions, and reduced recoil weapons and launchers.
  • Instrumented test and evaluation— using indoor containment chambers and ballistic ranges for warheads, munitions, projectiles, small arms, armor systems, and explosion and fire containment/suppression systems.
  • Lightweight advanced armor component and appliqué development— specialized vehicle and personnel protection applications, with emphasis on mid-level and emerging threats. Vehicle protection technology thrusts are on electromagnetic armor, composite armors, ammunition compartmenting, and explosive suppression and containment. Systems integration work includes ground vehicle, boat and aircraft protection.
  • Scientific test and evaluation of substance detection systems— explosives and propellants, bombs, narcotics and/or their precursor chemicals with emphasis on laboratory, factory and field testing.
  • Security technology threat and vulnerability assessments— product assessments, evaluations, development and integration of prototype products and systems, with emphasis on entry-point screening for force and site protection.
  • Airborn magnetic and electromagnetic sensor systems— primarily for the detection and mapping of unexploded ordnance (UXO) at DoD sites. The systems include magnetic total field, vertical magnetic gradient, and time-domain electromagnetic sensor arrays, mounted in booms to a helicopter. Buried ordnance 2kg and smaller, ferrous and non-ferrous can be mapped with better than 1 meter positional accuracy, at coverage rates of up to 800 acres/day.
  • Theater missile flight body payload/fill surrogates— threat replica and projection development, modeling and fabrication, including high-fidelity targets, instrumentation and field support for lethality and missile testing.

To carry out its leading-edge work, Battelle operates various facilities throughout the United States as well as the High Energy Research Laboratory Area (HERLA), containing laboratories and facilities devoted to research and development, testing and evaluation, including:

  • Large Explosive Containment Facility—the largest privately owned blast containment facility in the United States.
  • Small Caliber Test Facility—a specialized testing and evaluation laboratory for a wide range of weapons, ammunition, armor and protective gear.
  • High Energy Research Facility—a multipurpose research and testing facility designed to contain blasts equivalent to 25 pounds of high explosive.
  • Explosives Preparation Facility—a fully equipped facility for temperature monitoring and precision cast-loading of military high explosives.
  • Hypervelocity Impact and Altitude Facility—a specialized laboratory for studies associated with launch and impact of projectiles or fragments filled with reactive materials.
