CASE STUDIES & INNOVATIONS:

Battelle has developed highly advanced computational simulation tools useful for modeling residual stress and distortion in welded and non-welded structures.

OUR APPROACH

The modeling techniques ranging from rapid welding heat flow solutions, to a unified weld material constitutive model, to residual stress and distortion development analysis procedures. The analysis procedures utilize a variety of Battelle’s proprietary simulation modules interfaced with well-known commercial FE software, in architecture as illustrated below. In addition to providing insight into welding-induced residual stresses and distortions, the impact of stress and distortions on structural performance, e.g., strength, fracture, fatigue behavior can also be readily quantified. These methodologies have also been used to solve residual stress and distortion problems in the areas of thermal cutting, thermal forming, their interactions with welding processes, and various composite compositions.
