CASE STUDIES & INNOVATIONS:

Battelle has been a leader in public transit safety and security for over 30 years—from preparing the first system safety guidance for the industry to establishing public transit protective strategies in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks.

Our Approach

Integrating a team of engineering, planning, and policy specialists, Battelle delivers innovative solutions to transit safety and security problems. We provide policy evaluation, analytical support, and engineering analysis to the Federal government, state and local agencies, and transit operators and equipment suppliers. For homeland security clients, Battelle provides threat and vulnerability assessment, protective strategies for transportation, training support for security awareness, and evaluation of security programs.

Core competencies in transit safety and security include:

  • Safety and Security Oversight–definition and operation of state programs to comply with Federal rules; audits of transit safety and security programs for compliance with requirements; safety and security investigations to identify shortcomings and realign program goals and objectives.
  • Technical Assistance to Build Proactive Safety and Security Programs—defining requirements and specifications; roles and responsibilities for safety, security, and emergency management programs; protective strategies to respond to threats and natural disasters; threat and vulnerability assessments; and sensitive security information management and protection.
  • Engineering Analysis and Development for Transit Infrastructure—measurement and analytical modeling of vehicle dynamic behavior, focusing on the steel wheel-steel rail interface; structural analysis of elevated guideways; engineering, reduced-scale, and full-scale prototyping of novel system components; development of specialized transducers and data acquisition/analysis systems for field measurements of track-train dynamics; and finite element analysis of structural systems.
  • Safety and Operational Evaluation of Advanced Propulsion Technologies—comparative field tests vs. conventional systems; maintenance and operating practices for LNG, CNG, fuel cell, and hybrid propulsion systems; and safety and emergency response measures for CNG and LNG systems.
  • Independent Safety Assessment—safety audits and analyses; assistance in system safety certification and safety case development; safety program development; reliability, availability, and maintainability (RAM) program development and implementation.
