BATTELLE INVESTS $1.5 MILLION IN STEM EDUCATION IN DAYTON SINCE 2009

COLUMBUS, Ohio—Battelle’s continuing dedication to Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) education has many benefits for the communities where it does business. Though it is headquartered in Columbus, Battelle has a significant interest in the Dayton region with offices near Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. During the last 15 months, Battelle has channelled more than $1.5 million into the Dayton region to support STEM efforts.

 

Public and private partners in Ohio have mobilized more than $110 million in resources to create the Ohio STEM Learning Network, which is managed by Battelle. The network began with five regional partnerships standing up STEM platform schools targeting under represented students. Ohio lawmakers also targeted $100 million for STEM college scholarships. Battelle is both an investor in STEM in Dayton and elsewhere in Ohio and also is in partnership at various levels of state government—including the Board of Regents— to put the plan to work.

 

Dan Kugel, Senior Market Manager at Battelle Dayton Operations and life-long Dayton-area resident is the Vice Chairman of the Board for EDvention. EDvention is a collaborative dedicated to accelerating growth of STEM talent in the Dayton region. Comprising more than 80 partner organizations, EDvention coordinates regional strategy and serves as a catalyst for innovation, resource development and advocacy in the region and beyond.

 

“EDvention is really making a difference, not only around Ohio but in Dayton,” said Kugel.

 

One of Kugel’s new responsibilities for EDvention will be to develop a broad base on industry partners who will provide mentors, summer jobs, internships and eventually, after graduation from college, permanent STEM positions that will grow the Dayton region.
