Diversity, Equity & Inclusion at Battelle

At Battelle, our mission is to be a major force in science and technology discovery and in translating knowledge into innovative applications that have significant societal and economic impacts.

Successfully advancing that mission and living up to our values requires a diverse and highly skilled workforce that brings unique ideas and backgrounds together to solve the world’s greatest scientific and technological challenges.

Inclusion in the Workplace

To support our employees, Battelle has formed Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) to improve Battelle’s workplace and ensure our team members feel welcome, respected and safe. ERGs are employee-led teams with executive sponsorship that nurture a diverse and inclusive workplace and align with our mission, values, strategy and culture. ERGs provide opportunities for employees to develop leadership skills, receive support and encouragement, and grow personally.

Championing Racial Diversity

The Embrace ERG advocates for racial diversity and equity at Battelle. Now, more than ever, Battelle is prioritizing the need to keep the conversation about systemic racism and social injustice at the forefront. Discrimination has no place in our society, and Battelle is committed to actions that work toward equity and inclusion for all.

Empowering for Success

The Women's Network ERG raises employee awareness and fosters greater understanding about issues that women still continue to face in the workplace. In addition, Battelle's Women's Network encourages participation in community events to bring new learnings and practices inside our organization to ensure that Battelle is a place where women can reach their full potential.

Creating a Safe Environment

The Prism ERG advocates for Battelle’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and allied (LGBTQA+) employees to ensure all people feel safe, supported and welcome regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression. This ensures that employees, potential employees, customers and business peers see Battelle as an employer and business partner of choice.

Valuing Next Generation Voices

The NextGen ERG gives a voice to young professionals and early-career employees within Battelle. We recognize that future science depends on future generations. To spur innovation and encourage growth, NextGen thrives to engage Battelle's youngest employees through meaningful conversation and engaging community events.

Honoring Military Service

The Military Support ERG engages our veteran community by bringing together our veterans, active employees in the National Guard or Reserve, and by supporting our military families and friends.

We understand the importance of "mission" to military personnel and Battelle's mission is a great fit for military veterans.

Driving Change in the World

Starting at the Source

Here at Battelle, we believe that long-lasting impactful change starts with our youth. That is why we choose to support educational programs and scholarships specifically for underrepresented students. This is done through many avenues, including the Metro Schools in Columbus and several national programs. Learn more.

Supporting the LGBTQ+ Community

Battelle has also pledged to combat the discrimination faced by the LGBTQ+ community, through various donations and events, such as:

  • Sponsoring the 2020 Virtual LGBTQ+ Unity Summit.
  • Holding events such as LGBTQ+ 101 and Protests as Catalysts for Change: Stonewall Uprising to inform others on this topic.
  • Highlighting the Marsha P. Johnson Institute with Battelle’s Always Giving: Summer of Impact program.

Innovating for the Future

Just like our science, we are constantly looking for ways to innovate and improve our culture. Here are some recent steps we have taken to drive our commitment toward diversity, inclusion, and collaboration moving forward:

  • Commitment to increasing the diversity of our intern and co-op hires.
  • Creating a “safe place" for employees to share their story and educate all of us to what our friends and colleagues have endured.
  • Collaborating with other business leaders in our community to join forces and implement change.
