About the Course
This course provides a unique opportunity for attendees to learn the details of the mesh-insensitive structural stress method for fatigue evaluation of welded structures, including its mechanics-based formulation, numerical implementation procedures, and S-N data correlations and life predictions. Through this training course, participants will become familiar with the most important issues associated with the fatigue analysis of welded joints and existing design and analysis methods. Participants, with hands-on experiences gained during the training course, should be able to:
- Solve fatigue design problems
- Effectively interpret and analyze fatigue test data
- Perform computer-based fatigue life estimations
An enhanced demo version of an automated structural stress post-processor and all course notes will be provided to all registered participants. Participants are encouraged to bring a laptop to fully participate in the hands-on exercises.

The course is taught by Dr. J.K. Hong, technical lead of the Center for Welded Structures Research, and co-developer of the mesh-insensitive structural stress method. He has published numerous peer-reviewed papers in journals and conference proceedings and lectured internationally as an invited speaker on fatigue and fracture issues of welded structures and advanced computational modeling techniques for welding and joining processes. Dr. Hong has received prestigious awards from R&D Magazine(2006) and American Welding Society (1998, 1999).
