To ensure that effective mitigation techniques can be developed, there is a great need for a better understanding of these residual stresses for individual engineering designs and fabrication procedures.
But welding processes are highly complex. Reliable computational simulation techniques require adequate consideration of the associated, multi-faceted physics and multi-scale mechanics in highly non-linear regime.
At present, there are no general-purpose commercial codes to address the need for residual stress and distortion prediction for actual engineering components.
