Fast Facts

  • The Battelle Critical Care Decontamination System™ is a self-contained, mobile decontamination system that uses vapor phase hydrogen peroxide (VPHP) to decontaminate N95 respirator masks.

  • Battelle CCDS™ renders SARS-CoV-2 non-infectious on N95 respirators and enables up to 20 reuses without degrading filter performance to help address the current U.S. PPE shortage.

  • The Battelle CCDS™ system is based on published research that Battelle performed for the FDA in 2015. Battelle CCDS™ uses the same decontamination process that was proven effective in this FDA study.

  • Battelle received FDA Emergency Use Authorization for the Battelle CCDS Critical Care Decontamination System™.

  • Each Battelle CCDS™ is designed to decontaminate up to 80,000 N95 respirators per day.

  • The system is scalable and designed for fast deployment to add capacity and to meet demand.

  • Respirator masks are tracked throughout our process with each hospital receiving their own masks back .

  • Battelle CCDS™ is effective against both viral and bacterial agents. Battelle tested VPHP decontamination efficacy against SARS-CoV-2 in our Bio Safety Level 3 (BSL 3) laboratories.

  • Battelle is currently conducting research to validate that other equipment, including surgical masks and ventilator components, can be decontaminated using this process.

  • On March 15, 2020, Battelle started building systems at one of its manufacturing operations in Columbus for shipment to sites around the country.

  • Battelle has a full medical device development team that works with the FDA on a regular basis.

  • Battelle is the largest, private, non-profit research and development organization in the world.
