Carbon Storage Solutions
Battelle has executed over 50 CCUS projects since the mid 1990’s. We are working to have a measurable impact on global CO2 mitigation by translating decades of research and scientific discovery to help commercial clients address risks in engineering, developing, and operating complex subsurface CO2 storage projects.
Complex Science Program Management
Battelle has leveraged multidisciplinary expertise to drive actionable science for clients like the National Science Foundation (NSF). We focus on delivering data science, data portals and cyberinfrastructure to support ecological research and discovery.
Advanced Plastics Recycling
Industrial manufacturing is a major source of CO2 emissions. Advanced Plastics Recycling or Upcycling allows for the degradation of plastics into their original monomers or other value added building blocks for reuse in either new plastic generation or upcycling to a new product to reduce CO2 emissions from new plastic production. Battelle’s researchers combine biology, materials science, chemical and systems engineering to develop processes and hardware to treat plastics to breakdown and convert products into value added products.
National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON)
Battelle is proud to manage NEON, one of the most ambitious ecology programs of all time. Since assuming management of the observatory for the National Science Foundation (NSF) in 2016, our team completed construction of the observatory, successfully transitioned all 81 field sites to operations and positioned the program to be a major contributor to ecological research for decades to come.
Arctic Support and Logistics Services (ARSLS)
The Arctic Research Support and Logistics Services(ARSLS) Gateway supports the fieldwork of research projects funded through the National Science Foundation’s science programs in the Arctic Sciences Section. Battelle, in partnership with the NSF works to make Arctic fieldwork safer, more efficient, and cost-effective.

Conference on Innovations in Climate Resilience
The Conference on Innovations in Climate Resilience, presented by Battelle in collaboration DOE National Laboratories, offers a curated technical program with invited keynote presentations, platform and lightning talks and a poster reception.
Steve Risser, Ph.D.Senior Research LeaderSteve Risser is always working to make products stronger, smaller, safer or more functional. Over his 30-year career in materials science, he has been instrumental in the development of dozens of innovations across a diverse range of industries.
Neeraj Gupta, Ph.D.Senior Technical LeaderNeeraj is a Senior Technical Leader who is an expert in deep geological carbon capture and storage (CCS), providing technical and program development leadership for Battelle’s carbon management and subsurface exploration.
Paula Mabee, Ph.D.Chief Scientist and Observatory Director, National Ecological Observatory NetworkPaula Mabee became the Chief Scientist and Observatory Director for the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) in early 2020. She was most recently a Nolop Distinguished Professor in the Department of Biology at the University of South Dakota, serving in that capacity since 1997. She joined the National Science Foundation in 2015, serving until 2017 as Division Director for the Division of Environmental Biology in the Directorate of Biological Sciences.
Technology Commercialization and Licensing
With over 90 years of research and development experience, Battelle supports all areas of industry with intellectual property focused on supply chain assurance including non-destructive, rapid inspection technologies, and full range of risk mitigation solutions.
