Application of Data Analytics and Geostatistics for Shale Facies Modeling
Data-driven integrated shale facies modeling is important to visualize distribution pattern of different facies and understand their influence on hydrocarbon production. This study examined facies heterogeneity of the Bakken Formation in the Williston Basin of North Dakota as a case study. Different data analytics techniques were used to classify and predict the distribution of shale facies based on core and petrophysical log data. The results show that the upper and lower Bakken shale members are vertically and laterally heterogeneous, and they can be classified into five different facies with different petrophysical properties. Organic-rich shale facies, which is positively correlated with hydrocarbon production, is more dominant than organic-lean shale facies.
