Short Course: Current State of Knowledge on the PFAS Site Characterization and Management: Sampling, Analysis, Fate and Transport, and Remediation

Over the years, widespread detections of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in different environmental and biological matrices has gained global attention. As the number of PFAS contaminated sites is growing rapidly, there is a need for a better understanding of the fate and transport of these broad class of chemicals for performing site investigations and remediation action programs.
This course will help environmental professionals, consultants and state/federal regulators involved with PFAS impacted site characterization or cleanup. The short course provides an overview of the current information available on the sampling and analytical chemistry challenges, current understanding of the fate and transport, and summary of current remedial and treatment practices employed at contaminated sites.
Kavitha Dasu, PhD, is a principal research scientist at Battelle. She has more than 7 years of experience in studying the fate of emerging organic contaminants such as per- and polyfluoroalkylated substances (PFAS) and other emerging contaminants (ECs) in complex environmental matrices. At Battelle, Kavitha provides subject matter expertise in areas of developing novel analytical methods for total PFAS, fate and transport assessment and development of remediation technologies for PFAS. She has published several peer-reviewed studies and book chapters on PFAS analytical methods, fate and biodegradability and serves as a peer reviewer for scientific journals. Kavitha holds a Ph.D. in Environmental Chemistry, M.Sc. in Organic Chemistry and B.Sc. in Chemistry.

Short Course: Fundamentals of Environmental Data Management for the Project Manager

Data management is critical for the success of an environmental program, but is often the last thing project managers think of when planning a project. Planning ahead of time for efficient, accurate data management will save untold hours in data retrieval, review and reporting.
This course will help project managers, scientists and engineers who have little experience with database systems to implement or oversee effective environmental data management in their environmental assessment, monitoring or remediation programs. It will provide a solid understanding of standard methods and available tools used in efficient and effective management and dissemination of data in environmental investigations.
Paul Dragos is a senior research scientist at Battelle with more than 30 years of experience in environmental investigations and data systems. With a combined background in oceanography and computer science, Paul has conducted and supervised oceanography investigations and environmental data management projects including field investigations, modeling efforts, database design and applications development. He is the author of multiple environmental reports and scientific papers. His efforts have contributed to numerous environmental investigations and provide him with an extensive knowledge of the development of environmental data systems in marine water quality issues. He holds a Masters of Coastal Engineering.
Adam Laybourn is a research scientist at Battelle and has been wrangling environmental data for 10 years. With a background in geography and plant ecology, he has migrated into the data management world and has focused on information systems to move, transform and analyze data from and between online repositories, database servers and statistical software.
