COLUMBUS, OH. 16 April, 2009—The Air Force Association (AFA) will collaborate with Battelle to support Ohio STEM schools, the two organizations announced today.  They intend to work with Ohio network members to promote programs of extraordinary learning experiences and to pursue the vision of a robust educational system that will produce the next generation of scientifically proficient students who will fill the jobs of the future.

“Battelle is honored by AFA’s decision to collaborate on OSLN.  AFA is nationally recognized for its vibrant advocacy and support of aerospace education, and its deep involvement in STEM programs brings priceless experience to our team,” said Rich Rosen, Battelle Corporate Vice President, Education Partnerships, and Executive Director, Ohio STEM Learning Network.

OSLN, managed by Battelle, is designed to increase the quality of STEM education among underserved populations throughout Ohio using a Network-centric approach.  AFA will benefit from the technically educated students that the Air Force will need to meet today’s scientific and technical challenges.  The collaboration between Battelle and AFA also will give STEM students a broader view on career choices.

“The Air Force Association applauds the bold initiative of the Ohio STEM Learning Network,” said Sanford (Sandy) Schlitt, AFA’s National Vice Chairman of the Board for Aerospace Education.  “STEM education is a national security issue and a foundational element of our nation’s aerospace power.  We are facing a huge strategic challenge, and we need strategic efforts like OSLN to address it.”

John McCance, AFA State President for Ohio said, “We are truly excited about this opportunity to join forces with Battelle to set the stage for the nation by showing how large-scale transformation of STEM education is achievable right here in Ohio.”  He was joined by Kent Owsley, President of AFA’s Wright Memorial Chapter in Dayton who said, “Dayton area AFA members actively support a full range of outstanding local STEM initiatives.  The STEM education programs in this region have gained national recognition because of the strong community participation and the involvement of the Air Force Laboratory.  Dayton has joined the OSLN and it’s a natural fit for AFA to get behind this great initiative.”

AFA is dedicated to ensuring America’s aerospace excellence through education, scholarships, grants, awards, and public awareness programs.  AFA works through a network of thousands of individual members and volunteers to distribute educational materials to schools and concerned citizens.  The AFA educates the public about the critical role of aerospace power in defense of our nation.

Launched in January 2008, the Ohio STEM Learning Network is managed by Battelle and a team of affiliates and works to advance STEM education in the state of Ohio.  Currently the network consists of five regional STEM “platform” schools in urban areas across the state.  Its mission is to make STEM education work for Ohio by partnering with state and national practitioners—including the AFA—to support the growth and quality of STEM programs.

Air Force Association (AFA) is a 501(C)(3), nonprofit organization promoting public understanding of aerospace power and the pivotal role it plays in the security of the nation. AFA has more than 200 chapters nationally and internationally representing 125,000 members. Visit AFA at http://www.AFA.org.
