With about $100,000 and a little specialized knowledge, a Canadian researcher and his team resurrected horsepox in 2016.

“He created an extinct virus from scratch through mail order,” said Alisa Blazek, a molecular biologist at Battelle, a science and technology research and development institute based in Columbus. “There’s no law against that.”
