Battelle’s affordable analytics software offers hospitals valuable insights in months instead of years.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (Sept. 16, 2015)—Battelle announced today the national rollout of its WayFinder QI Dashboard, an affordable, advanced analytics tool that accelerates hospitals’ abilities to track and analyze Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and other quality metrics and enables cross-hospital quality improvement (QI) collaboration. The announcement follows a nearly two-year collaboration between non-profit Battelle, the Ohio Hospital Association (OHA) and nine Ohio hospitals to develop and pilot the software.

WayFinder uses advanced statistical models that help hospitals and health systems find the actionable information hidden inside large pools of patient data. With this solution in place, hospitals can better support their quality improvement initiatives with capabilities that enable them to:

  • Track recent clinical performance, including adverse events
  • Predict scores with a 95% confidence rate
  • View quality indicators in detail
  • Compare performance with other hospitals and health systems
  • Assess actionable data
  • Predict how they will fare on CMS’ performance based reimbursements

WayFinder is unique among its competitors because it accelerates the time-to-value for hospitals by securing insights from AHRQ quality data quickly, cutting a process that previously took as much as two years down to mere months. By eliminating this “seven-quarter lag,” which is the typical timeline for AHRQ reporting, hospitals will have access to fresher QI data, enabling them to better understand what’s happening in their systems and make informed decisions more quickly.

WayFinder brings a versatile, scalable and affordable analytics solution to the healthcare market, with the ability to support the needs of individual hospitals as well as hospital associations or health systems and their multiple hospitals. WayFinder can provide detailed insights on patients who experience adverse events and the risk factors associated with those incidents. The software also offers broader, enterprise-level insights for quality collaboration, enabling hospitals to work together to identify and share best practices and target areas of improvement across hospital networks.

WayFinder also offers these analytics capabilities at a fraction of the cost of larger competitors, contributing tremendous value to hospitals without compromising quality. “We understand hospitals today are challenged to both improve the quality and affordability of care,” said Warren Strauss, Director of Advanced Analytics and Health Research at Battelle. “WayFinder enables hospitals to derive actionable insights from reliable, current data by removing the two-year blind spot in AHRQ reporting. If these insights help avoid just one or two negative patient outcomes, a hospital will save enough to pay for WayFinder.”

Battelle began working with the OHA in 2013 to create WayFinder. Since then, many improvements have been made with the help of nine member hospitals in Ohio.

“Ensuring a healthy Ohio requires specific strategy based on sophisticated and reliable data. The WayFinder program equips hospitals with a unique ability to navigate data more effectively to identify opportunities for improvement,” said Mike Abrams, president and CEO, OHA. “This program will enhance OHA’s longstanding commitment to improving health care quality and patient safety in Ohio. Through our Institute for Health Innovation, we will continue to lead regional and statewide quality improvement initiatives that incorporates health care data analytics.”
