COLUMBUS, Ohio (Feb. 16, 2015)—Offering hands-on internships plus $20,000 in scholarship funds, Battelle has launched a new opportunity for highly-motivated college juniors.
Applicants selected will complete a two-year experience building their leadership skills while they help increase participation of underrepresented groups in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).
“The Battelle STEM Scholars program embodies two components of any great education,” said Aimee Kennedy. “Real-world experience and service to the community.”
The inaugural class of Battelle STEM Scholars will have a full summer to develop materials and presentations about their experience as a STEM major. These presentations will be designed to engage and inspire young potential area high schools. Then, beginning in May 2016, these scholars will complete a regular internship at one of Battelle’s world-class laboratories while also bringing their unique perspective on STEM to local schools.
Upon completion of this two-year experience, the scholars will receive a $20,000 scholarship. The scholars will also have established deep roots at Battelle and in the surrounding community and they will have helped foster the next generation of STEM innovators.
This pilot of the Battelle STEM scholars program is open to:
● Public Health & Health Economist majors from Emory University, University of Georgia, and Georgia State University
● Computer Science majors from UMBC (University of Maryland, Baltimore County)
