Formulations Make Bleach Effective in Cold Water, Protects Oil/Gas Pipelines and has Advantages for Agrochemical, Fragrances and Clothing

COLUMBUS, Ohio (Apr. 27, 2015)—The award-winning encapsulation technology that revolutionizes laundry by activating bleach in cold water and that can protect infrastructure and pipelines from corrosion can transform personal care, apparel, cleaning and other products.

Battelle scientists will share insights into the technology’s potential future applications during a May 5 webinar, Encapsulation by Design”.

The technology allows scientists to create shelf-stable products that combine formerly incompatible ingredients, such as bleach and activator. It keeps one ingredient safely enclosed in a polymer capsule that can be designed to respond to a variety of different or novel release triggers, like corrosion, pH, temperature, pressure or dilution.

As an example, the patented The Battelle Smart Laundry Capsule™ additive allows bleach to be effective in cold water. The Smart Laundry Capsule eases the burden of doing laundry while saving money, helping conserve energy and being gentle on the environment. It was recently ranked the number two innovation of 2014 by readers of the trade publication Tomorrow’s Cleaning.

“Bleach performs best in hot water. In cold water, you need something else – and activator -- that makes bleach effective. The BATTELLE Smart Laundry Capsule TM effectively combines them in a single product by encapsulation of the activator in a stable, biodegradable polymer,” said Ram Lalgudi, Battelle Senior Research Scientist and developer of the encapsulation technology. “In the wash cycle, detergent triggers a pH change that releases the bleach activator, producing a highly effective cold water cleaning environment. The polymer is biodegradable, which means Battelle’s micro-capsules are not harmful to the environment.”

Encapsulation technology, based upon Lalgudi’s career of research and study, can improve fragrances, dishwashing, agrichemicals and nutraceuticals. For example, The Battelle Smart Laundry Capsule™ additive can be used to create special coatings that detect corrosion and stop further damage and make repairs.
