Battelle Wins Innovation Award for Outstanding Service

COLUMBUS, OH., 4 February, 2011—A trio of researchers on a Battelle project team accepted an Innovation Award Feb. 3 for their groundbreaking work in statistics and human health.

The award is given to a company with more than 50 employees that has defined, introduced and marketed a technology-based service that has shown success in addressing an industry need or market niche.

The technology was developed as part of Battelle’s support of the National Children’s Study, which is the largest long-term study of human health ever conducted in the United States. It will track the health and development of 100,000 children from conception to age 21 and gather data about how genes and the environment interact to affect childhood health.

The three researchers—Warren Strauss, Michele Morara from Battelle’s Centers for Public Health Research and Evaluation and Dr. Louise Ryan (formerly at Harvard, now at CSIRO in Australia) developed an innovative statistical approach for gathering exposure information that focuses on assessing relationships between adverse health outcomes and complex environmental exposures. Compared to current methods, Battelle’s approach typically reduces study costs by two thirds with no loss in statistical power. This advance enables public health studies that previously were prohibitively expensive and also will lead to studies that reduce the burden of expense and sometimes invasive measures on the study participants.

“We were thrilled to win this award, and we were also very surprised to win because there were really fantastic projects that were nominated,” said Strauss. “For a project that’s called Validation Sampling, one of the things that I found gratifying was that this award validated the work we are doing as being really impactful for public health research.”
