Columbus, OH., 28, Oct. 2013–Battelle is the only organization to win two awards in the 2013 Defense Energy Technology Challenge/Utility Technology Challenge.
The joint challenge programs will run concurrently with the Defense Energy Summit where winners will be recognized. The event takes place Nov. 11-13 in Austin, Texas.
The DETC/UTC challenge programs recognize companies and technologies focused on cleaner and more environmentally sustainable energy solutions and are designed to meet the complex needs of the military and commercial industries. Thirty awards were given to the technologies with the best balance of stage of development, potential impact, cost and ease of implementation. The Defense Energy Summit (DES) is produced by TechConnect, in partnership with the Clean Technology & Sustainable Industries Organization (CTSI), which runs both challenge programs.
Battelle’s two awards came for smart grid innovations and a novel waste-to-gas conversion technology.
Grid Command Active Demand Management (ADM): Battelle’s ADM software platform manages loads to keep grids stable and more efficient and to prevent outages. The ADM system incorporates real-time status updates to selectively choose loads according to changing grid conditions. ADM stabilizes grids with no emissions or fuel costs and increases generator efficiency and reliability.
The ADM platform is a flexible, scalable system that can be used to aggregate and manage residential, commercial and industrial loads. Thanks to its two-way, real-time communications and control methodology, the ADM allows loads to be used as resources for grid operations while minimizing the impact on end uses. The primary benefits for a military implementation of the ADM system at the installation level are cost reductions, energy security, energy efficiency, reliability, reduced capacity requirements and longer equipment life.
Waste to Energy – Steam Reformation:
As part of a strategic partnership with Elementa, Battelle is delivering a leading-edge energy technology for applications in the DOD marketplace. The technology is a novel waste-to-gas conversion technology that produces clean and efficient renewable energy from waste feedstock. It is based on a unique steam reformation (SR) process, a patented clean-energy technology that uses high temperature SR in a non-oxidizing environment to chemically break down carbon based materials into a clean syngas.
Unlike most current systems that require oxidation/incineration, the system does not generate noxious oxides. Syngas can be utilized to generate electricity or produce hydrogen and a variety of liquid fuels. For military installations, the Battelle waste-to-energy solution provides a means to locally generate power and fuels using government-owned infrastructure or via third-party ownership/operation. The development of an independent, efficient and secure energy system that can integrate with existing and future grid architectures and that uses readily available feed stock, reduces dependence on outside energy sources and provides a path to more cost-effective mission accomplishment, as well as to meeting compliance mandates.
