Columbus, OH., 29 August, 2013—Battelle has hired an internationally known scientist in the field of human identification to lead its growing Identity Management business.
Richard Guerrieri has more than 30 years of forensic laboratory experience, including nearly 20 years with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Army Criminal Investigative Laboratory.
At Battelle, Guerrieri will serve as Identity Management’s Forensic DNA Research Leader. He will focus on expanding Battelle’s forensic DNA research capabilities for application in the law enforcement, defense and intelligence communities.
Battelle’s Identity Management group uses next-generation sequencing (NGS) for precise identification and characterization of individuals and microbes. The group helps companies and government agencies by delivering comprehensive solutions by developing bioinformatic algorithms and software for translation of NGS data to practical results, developing bioinformatic databases, and incorporating NGS analysis for advanced biodetection, biosurveillance, and biometric device development.
“We are delighted that someone of Rich’s caliber is joining Battelle,” said Mike Dickens, General Manager of Identity Management at Battelle. “His rock solid technological experience—combined with his drive for innovation—make him the right fit for Battelle as we build business in the rapidly evolving science of forensic DNA analysis.”
Guerrieri is a court recognized expert witness with more than 250 testimonies who has established the nation’s largest capacity and highest throughput DNA database testing laboratory. He also has worked for Roche Biomedical Laboratories and for the Commonwealth of Virginia and holds a bachelor’s degree in biology and a master’s in forensic chemistry from the University of Pittsburgh.
