Jeff Wadsworth Awarded Medal for the Advancement of Research

Posted on Oct 3, 2011

COLUMBUS, OH., 3 October, 2011—At Battelle, important words in the corporate lexicon are  “simultaneous excellence.” ASM International will recognize Battelle President and CEO. Jeff Wadsworth for following that philosophy in his professional life with the 2011 Medal for the Advancement of Research.

Wadsworth will receive the award at the Materials Information Society’s Materials Science & Technology Conference in Columbus on Oct. 18 for his “sustained executive leadership and outstanding contributions to materials research and development.”

In addition to leading the world’s largest independent research and development organization since the beginning of 2009, Wadsworth is a metallurgist and world-renowned expert on Damascus Steel, a legendary sword making material. He also is widely known for his leading research in the specialized field of superplasticity.

The first portion of his career evolved from research and development into time spent as an executive. Following his work at Stanford, Lockheed, and the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Wadsworth assisted the White House in the establishment of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security from 2002 to 2003 and also led Battelle’s Homeland Security Program until 2006. He was the Director of Oak Ridge National Laboratory from 2003 to 2007 and oversaw Battelle’s Laboratory Operations as Executive Vice President from 2007 through the end of 2008.

“Certainly, it is a great honor to receive this award from ASM International,” said Wadsworth. “The work behind the award is, of course, the result of innumerable partnerships with many colleagues, and it is wonderful that we are recognized by such an outstanding organization.”
