COLUMBUS, Ohio (January 26, 2021)— Mark Peters, formerly director of the Idaho National Laboratory, has transitioned to new work as Battelle's executive vice president of laboratory operations after more than five years of INL leadership.

He has led INL since October 2015 and succeeded Ron Townsend, who retired from Battelle after a 12-year career, the nonprofit research and development organization said Monday.

Battelle operates INL for the Department of Energy in partnership with Amentum, BWX Technologies (NYSE: BWXT), the Electric Power Research Institute and a national university consortium.

Lou Von Thaer, president and CEO of Battelle and a 2020 Wash100 Award recipient, said Peters brings to the organization his extensive relationships across the DOE community and is known for advocating national lab missions.

Peters spent more than 11 years at the Illinois-based Argonne National Laboratory in various roles such as associate director for the energy and global security directorate.

He also worked at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico for six years and chaired the National Laboratory Directors Council for two terms.
