COLUMBUS, Ohio (Jan. 30, 2014)—Battelle is helping Ohio in its pledge of 25,000 mentors to the Million Women Mentors (MWM) effort. The MWM movement seeks to garner one million mentors in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) professions during the next four years to collectively increase the interest and confidence of girls and young women in these academic areas.
Ohio’s pledge is made jointly with Kansas, Missouri, Indiana and New Jersey. The 25,000 mentor commitment means Ohio has promised the largest number of any states. In total, the national Million Women Mentors movement will announce more than 40,000 commitments to mentor a girl or young woman in STEM skills this week.
Battelle, the world’s largest independent research and development organization with a long history of support for STEM education, is leading efforts in Ohio.
“Mentoring young women is a true win-win,” says Aimee Kennedy, Vice-President of Education, Philanthropy and STEM Learning at Battelle. “As mentors, we can help unleash the full potential of the next generation of American innovators.”
Ohio is well on its way to creating a strong state steering committee with commitments to serve from several STEM and women-related organizations. Ohio organizations interested in joining the effort should contact Battelle’s Stephanie Johnson at email@example.com.
Nationally, Tata Consultancy Services, PepsiCo, the Lieutenant Governor of Iowa and Apollo Education Group also are committing to mentor girls and young women in STEM fields. By taking the pledge at www.MillionWomenMentors.org, these states, organizations and corporations are committing to mentoring a young woman for a minimum of 20 hours through one of the five suggested mentor pathways.
“We salute the state-level leadership and know how hard they have worked to build their mentoring pledges,” states Edie Fraser, CEO of STEMconnector® and Million Women Mentors®. “Adding these new pledges to the over 160,000 already made through our official site www.MillionWomenMentors.org takes us past the 200,000 mark – which is tremendous since our four-year initiative only launched in January, 2014. We expect big corporate and government pledge announcements in the coming months as well as a city movement where mayors are joining the MWM Movement.”
