COLUMBUS, OH., 11 May, 2012—Battelle, the world’s largest, independent research and development organization, and its protégé, Tidewater, Inc., were awarded the prestigious Nunn-Perry Award by the Department of Defense (DoD).
Tidewater is an 8(a) Small Disadvantaged Business Concern specializing in environmental investigation and remediation, industrial hygiene, and construction management.
The Nunn-Perry Awards recognize successful business mentor–protégé teams that excel in technical assistance, return on investments, and protégé development. The award, named in honor of former Senator Sam Nunn and former Secretary of Defense William Perry, was first awarded in 1995 to recognize outstanding Mentor-Protégé teams associated with the DoD.
“The Nunn-Perry Award is highly valued in the DoD and small business communities and is a significant honor for both Battelle and Tidewater,” said Chris Gunther, Vice President of Battelle’s Marine Corps Market Sector. “The program is a great vehicle to foster close working relationships.”
The program encourages large contractors, such as Battelle, to share their technical expertise and knowledge of government contracting with innovative small businesses. The program’s major goal is to positively impact the growth of the defense industry base through partnerships between small, innovative technology companies and major defense industry contractors. The Battelle-Tidewater Mentor-Protégé agreement was awarded under an environmental remediation contract with the Naval Facilities Engineering Command Southwest in San Diego.
Technical assistance provided to Tidewater included training in innovative environmental remediation tools and methods to make environmental remediation projects more efficient and sustainable. Training of Tidewater in these methods will provide value-added support as they pursue U.S. Navy environmental remediation projects. George Mason University, a Small Business Procurement Technical Assistance Center (PTAC) was also part of the mentor-protégé team providing additional training support in business systems.
Battelle also received the Nunn-Perry Award in 2002.
As the world’s largest independent research and development organization, Battelle provides innovative solutions to the world’s most pressing needs through its four global businesses: Laboratory Management; National Security; Health and Life Sciences; and Energy, Environment and Material Sciences. It advances scientific discovery and application by conducting $6.2 billion in global R&D annually through contract research, laboratory management and technology commercialization.
Headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, Battelle oversees 22,000 employees in more than 130 locations worldwide, including eight national laboratories for which Battelle has a significant management role on behalf of the U.S. Department of Energy, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and the United Kingdom.
