Battelle engineer brings a wealth of industry experience to joint venture as it opens its first commercial unit

SHARON, Penn. (July 31, 2014)—Carolyn Kotsol becomes the President and Chief Executive Officer of Winner Water Services on August 1. She replaces John Ontiveros, who directed the startup of the company 18 months ago and now will return to Battelle.

Winner Water is a joint venture formed in early 2013 by Battelle and Winner. It provides the oil and gas industry with treated water for energy recovery using a Battelle patented filtration process on acid mine drainage from abandoned coal mines that are harmful to their surrounding ecosystems. This process gives businesses an environmentally friendly alternative that preserves fresh water for other purposes.

“I’m very excited to get started,” said Kotsol. “John has done an admirable job establishing momentum which I look to build upon as Winner Water enters into its next phase.”

Kotsol joined Battelle in 2012 and was manager of the Process Engineering Systems Resource Group where she was responsible for defining new business areas and strategies aimed at ensuring operational success and expert delivery. Through a broad range of product development activities, Kotsol transitioned technologies from the laboratory to applicable field operations and established robust design and engineering practices to meet the needs of the group’s target markets.

Prior to working at Battelle, Kotsol was the principal engineer and owner of Thermo-Solutions, LLC where she provided process engineering development, design and scale up for clients in the biofuels and bio-based chemicals markets. She also was Director of Engineering and R&D for 14 years with Delta-T Corporation, where she developed a unique process design for processing starch, cellulosic, and algae feedstocks to bio-ethanol.

Kotsol holds a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from Youngstown State University and a Master’s of Business Administration from the College of William and Mary.

Ontiveros has worked at Battelle for 16 years as a program manager and operations manager and will return as the VP and Deputy General Manager of the Cyber Innovation business unit now that his duties at Winner Water are complete.

“John was a true professional and we enjoyed working with him,” said Karen Winner Sed. “We look forward to Carolyn’s leadership as our company continues to evolve.”

This summer, Winner Water’s first industrial treatment system came online in Sarver, Pennsylvania on the site of a former coal mine northeast of Pittsburgh. The water is purified to remove iron and sulfate using a patented technology called HydroFlex developed about a decade ago at Battelle.

The company provides water management services to the unconventional oil and gas industry that include remediation, recycling, permitting, and engineering solutions.
