Erik Mettala Joins Battelle as Cyber Chief Scientist

COLUMBUS, OH., 27 April, 2011-- Battelle has hired Erik G. Mettala, Ph.D., as Cyber Chief Scientist in the National Security Global Business Unit, Battelle announced today.   
In this new role, Mettala will be responsible for Battelle Cyber Innovation’s technology research and development efforts. These include strategic planning, managing current government and internal research and development (IR&D) projects, and increasing the research and market impacts of Battelle’s cyber-related business in the defense, intelligence, and homeland security sectors.

Mettala joins Battelle with more than 35 years of R&D experience with government agencies including the Department of Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and the U.S. Army Communications and Electronics Command, and private companies including Microelectronics and Computer Technology Corporation (MCC, Elagent Corporation, and Network Associates Labs, renamed to McAfee Research, later acquired by SPARTA).

In his tenure at DARPA, Mettala served as Program Manager, Office Deputy Director, and Office Director of the Software and Intelligent Systems Technology Office; managed eight R&D programs including Internetworking Protocols and Robotics, and; represented DARPA in key planning efforts within the Federal government, including the Next Generation Internet Program, the Office of the Secretary of Defense Joint Robotics Program, and the Federal High Performance Computing and Communications Program.  
Prior to joining Battelle, Mettala served as Chief Scientist at SPARTA, Inc. dba Cobham Analytic Solutions in Columbia, Maryland, where he directed research in information assurance, computer network operations, and network based intelligence. 
Mettala holds a Ph.D. in Industrial and Management Systems Engineering from Pennsylvania State University, a Master of Science in Management Science and a Master of Science in Computer Science from Texas A&M University, Central Texas (formerly American Technological University). He served 22 years in the U.S. Army and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel.
