COLUMBUS, OH., 29 September, 2010—Shalendra Porwal recently was named Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Battelle India after leading the organization for nearly two years as Senior Vice President and General Manager.
Porwal, who has worked for Battelle in a variety of roles for 31 years, is a native of India and said he is happy to be leading the new venture of Battelle in India as Battelle grows its Asian global business.
Battelle India, a wholly owned subsidiary of Battelle located in Pune, currently employs about 20 people in its offices and laboratories conducting research primarily in advanced materials and process engineering. The work encompasses development and characterization of materials as well as process development, computational modeling, and analysis.
Some recent projects involve:
- Colorimetric detection of pesticide residue on fruits and vegetables.
- Assisting a client in development of energy efficient processes for the production of titanium, aluminum and iron
- New applications of Battelle’s proprietary Verity® software for the prediction of fatigue in welded joints.
- Development of a novel reactor for growing algae.
The Department of Scientific and Industrial Research of India recently gave its official recognition to the in-house R&D unit of Battelle India, which means that Indian companies that fund work at Battelle India are eligible for a significant tax deduction.
“Our goal with our India operation is to build and serve as a credible R&D resource with high quality, trained scientists and lab capabilities to deliver solutions to complex technical problems,” Porwal said.
Battelle India also practices the same charitable mission as its parent organization, Battelle. Battelle India recently awarded funding to Fulbright Scholar Dr. Amos Winter to improve his technology for a new wheelchair design suitable for developing nations.
As the world’s largest independent research and development organization, Battelle provides innovative solutions to the world’s most pressing needs through its four global businesses: Laboratory Management; National Security; Health and Life Sciences; and Energy, Environment and Material Sciences. It advances scientific discovery and application by conducting $6.2 billion in global R&D annually through contract research, laboratory management and technology commercialization.
Headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, Battelle oversees 22,000 employees in more than 130 locations worldwide, including eight national laboratories for which Battelle has a significant management role on behalf of the U.S. Department of Energy, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and the United Kingdom.
Battelle also is one of the nation’s leading charitable trusts focusing on societal and economic impact and actively supporting and promoting science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education.
