COLUMBUS, OH., 6 January, 2010 - Battelle’s energy technology commercial solutions business announced today that it is working with 14 of the nation’s leading electric utilities and power systems suppliers to demonstrate the increased efficiency and reliability of electric power distribution through the application of intelligent systems to the power grid.

COLUMBUS, OH., 2 December, 2009—Battelle Vice President of Energy Infrastructure Mani Vadari has been elected to the board of directors of the GridWise Alliance for a two-year term.

What: Battelle is a co-leader in two major initiatives aimed at addressing global climate change through electric grid technology. One is with American Electric Power on a 110,000-home project in Columbus, Ohio, and the other is in the Pacific Northwest in a demonstration which combines energy providers, utilities, vendors, and research organizations. In total, 16 regional smart grid demonstration awards were announced by DOE today.

COLUMBUS, OH., 22 October, 2009—The most recent demonstration of injecting carbon dioxide deep underground provides yet another step in proving that this technology (known as carbon capture and sequestration) can be an answer to the challenge of curbing greenhouses gases that are vented into Earth’s atmosphere.

COLUMBUS, OH. 2 October, 2009—The wait is over. Ferratec and R&D partner Electrosynthesis have successfully scaled up Battelle’s ferrate process technology, which means the powerful chemical oxidizer that was once nearly impossible to get in large quantities is now available by the kilogram. Battelle had shown the material, valuable to chemists the world over, could be produced in bench-scale quantities with their process. Ferratec licensed the process and now, with partner Electrosynthesis, has successfully completed pilot-scale trials and is ready to move to full-scale production.

SALT LAKE CITY, UT. 1 September, 2009 — The Utah Safety Council last week presented multiple safety awards to Battelle and EG&G, contractors at the Tooele Chemical Agent Disposal Facility (TOCDF), the U.S. Army chemical weapons incinerator complex located at Deseret Chemical Depot.

COLUMBUS, OH. 20 August, 2009—Battelle announced today that it has successfully transitioned the autonomous pCO2 monitoring system to its Blazer Parkway manufacturing center. An analytical instrument designed to help scientists understand and predict climate change, the pCO2 monitoring system was developed as part of an innovative cooperative effort with the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA).

COLUMBUS, OH. 30 June, 2009 – Battelle was recently awarded the renewal of a technical support contract with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Office of Pollution Prevention and Toxics (OPPT). This five-year task-order contract has a value of $32.6 million.
