Featured Expert: Dr. Katherine Knostman: Veterinary Pathologist

Dr. Katherine (Katie) Knostman is shedding new light on the physiological effects produced by drugs, chemical and biological agents. As a Veterinary Pathologist, she plays a key role in toxicology and safety pharmacology studies conducted at Battelle.

Most of Katie’s work falls into two areas: environmental toxicology and safety pharmacology. She has been involved in numerous studies to examine the toxicity and carcinogenic potential of a variety of industrial and everyday chemicals. She has also been extensively involved in safety studies for new pharmaceuticals, including medical countermeasures for chemical and biological agents. In her role, Katie supervises the technicians who conduct necropsies of animal subjects and conducts histopathological analysis to identify the physiological effects produced by the disease, treatment or chemical. She is also involved with helping to develop new animal models of diseases. Most recently, she has been assisting with safety studies of three new Ebola vaccines.

Katie joined the Battelle Life Sciences Research Team in 2007, shortly after receiving her Ph.D. in Veterinary Biosciences from The Ohio State University. Prior to coming to Battelle, she earned a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from OSU and spent time working in clinical practice. After serving as a small animal veterinarian for six years, Katie decided to return to complete residency work and post-doctoral research in pathology. In the future, Katie expects to be doing more work on antibiotics and antimicrobials due to an urgent need to find effective countermeasures for bacteria that have developed resistance to current antibiotics. She also sees a need for more research in developmental and reproductive toxicology to see whether chemicals are safe during pregnancy and for children.
