Featured Expert: Dr. Yun Li: Principal Scientist

Dr. Yun Li Yun Li

Dr. Yun Li joined the Battelle Life Sciences Research Team this past summer. As a Principal Scientist, she will be putting her experience in virology and microbiology to work to develop new bioassays and conduct efficacy studies of novel drugs and vaccines. 

Yun is a molecular biologist with extensive research background in molecular virology, immunology, microbiology and biochemistry. She has worked in both academic and industry settings. Much of her previous research focused on the study of HIV replication and development of potential vaccines. She spent 14 years studying the retrovirus, which has proven to be notoriously difficult to control and vaccinate against. Her work includes development of an animal model of HIV infection and development of molecular and cell-based assays for evaluation of potential HIV drugs, therapies and vaccines. Her background also includes research into cancer metastasis and anti-cancer drug discovery. As a scientist for the Institute of Chemical Genomics, she was part of a team to demonstrate the efficacy of anti-cancer drug candidates targeting recognized cancer genes with breast and colon cancer models.

At Battelle, Yun is applying this background to help our client companies with drug discovery. She is currently acting as the Study Director for two bioassay development projects. Much of her work is focused on developing cell-based immunoassays to evaluate immune response to candidate vaccines against viral infections, including alphavirus and filovirus. Her broad prior experiences with a wide range of bacteria and viruses give her an ideal background for helping pharmaceutical companies discover novel therapies and vaccines.

Yun holds a Ph.D. in Microbiology from The Ohio State University, an M.S. in Molecular Genetics from Shanghai Institute of Pharmaceutical Industry, and a B.S. in Biology from Peking University. She completed post-doctoral research at the University of Alabama, the University of Michigan, and the University of Washington.
