Battelle’s Support of Local STEM Programs Hits Milestone with Recent Donation

TAMPA, Florida—Battelle’s commitment to supporting local Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) education programs during the last five years hit a noteworthy milestone this year. A $15,000 donation to Career Technical Education Foundation (CTEF) funding Pinellas County’s East Lake High School STEM programming brings Battelle’s total donations to $50,000 since 2010 for CTEF STEM programming.

Battelle, the world’s largest private research and development organization, has local offices with personnel who provide technology and mission support to the U.S. Special Operations Command.

As a non-profit charitable trust that was founded with a mission to use science to benefit humankind, Battelle supports STEM education in the communities where it has offices, and in larger state, regional and national initiatives.

“We think it’s important that companies partner with local educators to produce the next generation of scientists, technology professionals and engineers,” said John Folkerts, vice president for Battelle’s Special Operations sector. “Fostering these skills helps not only our military forces, but will keep our country competitive in a broad range of industries.”

“I want to thank Battelle for sustaining its support by recognizing the continuing efforts of CTEF to Change the Face of Education Today to Meet the Needs of Tomorrow,” said Paul Wahnish, president and founder of CTEF.  Wahnish recently was nominated for Career Educator of the Year by Pinellas Education Foundation for his significant contribution to Pinellas public schools’ education and training in STEM programs.

“I met Paul Wahnish when my son started the East Lake High School engineering program as a freshman,” said Chris Whitaker, who spearheads Battelle's local involvement with CTEF. “Paul captivated the audience at the orientation session and I was hooked on his STEM education concept.”

This year's $15,000 grant from Battelle will be used to support equipment upgrades and purchase of new equipment to support the high school and new middle school program.
