High Reliability Autonomous Ocean Sensor
Challenge
A high-accuracy, high-reliability autonomous sensor system that measures ocean acidification. Five subsystems produced by Battelle are direct shipped to domestic and international destinations and are deployed on buoys around the globe for 18 months at a time. The subsystems are mechanical, electrical, electromechanical, and electro-pneumatic and are contained in sealed, custom, composite shells.
Solution
A functioning laboratory proof-of-concept developed by MBARI and NOAA was needed in larger volumes to meet market demands, needed at a lower cost, and with higher reliability.
Impact
Battelle successfully and collaboratively transitioned the original design into a cost-reduced and manufacturable system. These sealed precision systems are meeting or exceeding their instrument accuracy requirements and reliability thresholds. After successful deployments these often return to Battelle for planned refurbishment and are then re-deployed.
