Sustained Coordinated Observations of Arctic Change (CoObs)
Challenge
In today's climate, there is an urgent need to improve the coordination among researchers and Arctic Peoples in their observations of rapid Arctic change. Particularly, food security for local Arctic communities has been significantly impacted by changing ice and ocean conditions. As a result, University of Alaska and Battelle received an NSF award to bring together research and local people's needs and determine what information/observations are needed to secure sustainable food supplies in near-coastal Arctic ecosystems.
Solution
- Bring together different perspectives (science and traditional knowledge) to inform new, transformative ways to capture information on the factors influencing, and sustainable solutions affecting Arctic food security
- Bring together experts from different scientific disciplines, and the local Arctic and Indigenous peoples to develop a sustainable observation roadmap
- Coalesce different observational, assessment, and modeling approaches into a merged vision and system design
- Use a novel systems engineering approach for requirements capture and design development
Impact
- Will provide a new way to inform/integrate science and society to benefit subsistence in the Arctic
- Will lead to a conceptual design document that can be used to seek further implementation, and to provide new opportunities for infrastructure implementation.
