oak ridge national laboratory logo

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) delivers scientific discoveries and technical breakthroughs needed to realize solutions in energy and national security and provide economic benefit to the nation. We address national needs through impactful research and world-leading research centers. ORNL researchers apply unique facilities, sophisticated tools, and signature strengths in neutron science, high-performance computing, advanced materials, biology and environmental science, nuclear science and engineering, isotopes, and national security research to benefit science and society, making it possible for us to:

  • Advance understanding, design, and use of new materials and chemical processes,
  • Reveal unmatched insights through computing and data,
  • Ensure safe, clean nuclear power and secure nuclear materials,
  • Produce rare isotopes for medicine, industry, security, research, and space exploration, and
  • Increase and exploit understanding of biological and environmental systems, from genes to ecosystems.

Established in 1943 as part of the Manhattan Project, ORNL is building on a legacy of discovery and innovation to continually address our most urgent R&D needs. Visit us at

pacific northwest national laboratory

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) research lays a foundation for innovations that advance sustainable energy through decarbonization and energy storage and enhance national security through nuclear materials and threat analyses. Distinctive strengths in chemistry, Earth sciences, biology, and data science are central to PNNL’s scientific discovery mission. PNNL collaborates with academia in its fundamental research and with industry to transition technologies to market.

PNNL researchers hold deep expertise in:

  • Integrating field and lab observations with modeling and advanced computation to understand and enable a more effective response to environmental change, including predicting extreme weather events and coastal flood risks to protect infrastructure.
  • Exploring the biological and carbon balance processes that are critical to ecosystem restoration and coastal resilience, and developing the chemistry and catalysis for commercial biofuels and carbon capture, conversion, and storage.
  • Improving the energy efficiency of homes, buildings, and the transportation sector while developing an electric grid that is more flexible, resilient, and secure.

Founded in 1965, PNNL is operated by Battelle for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science, which is the single largest supporter of basic research in the physical sciences in the United States.
