The ThreatSEQ DNA screening service offers gene synthesis companies an alternative to the current semi-manual and subjective DNA screening options, empowering them to make faster, better decisions to protect themselves, their clients and society from potential biosecurity risks while keeping costs manageable.

Our technology is based on threat identification algorithms built around Battelle’s proprietary virulence factors database containing genetic sequences of concern. Because the database is organized around specific sequences rather than matching against the full genomes of known pathogens, the algorithm can identify the specific sequence in question and inform biosecurity staff through comprehensive, automated reporting and assignment of threat status.

Virulence Factors Database 
The database was built on more than a decade of research into the factors that make pathogens dangerous. It compiles more than 10,000 sequences of concern comprising 850 types of sequences of concern from 75 species of bacteria, 96 viruses, 12 eukaryotic pathogens and other contributors to pathogens. 

These factors include (but are not limited to):  

  • Virulence factors
  • Antibiotic resistance
  • Immune evasion factors
  • Human bioregulators
  • Protein toxins
  • Other threat factors (e.g., opioid enzyme pathways)
The database covers 100 percent of U.S. Select Agents and Australia Group Lists (Tier 1) and virtually all known bacterial human/zoonotic agents. To ensure the most comprehensive comparison is performed, the user is also provided with results against the full genomes of organisms derived from the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) database and other select agent registries around the world.

Threat Identification Algorithm

The algorithm rapidly scans a requested DNA sequence and looks for matches within the threat factors database. Matches may be entire gene sequences or parts of gene sequences. Our ThreatSEQ web service has been designed to operate efficiently and to detect complex patterns (e.g., tiled mosaic DNA fragments).

In addition to identifying positive matches, our algorithm provides information about the types of threats that a gene sequence may present by analyzing the structures of the genes and their resulting functions. The existing analysis is supported by more than 4,400 full-text peer reviewed papers, and Battelle continues to update the database and algorithm as new research emerges.
Threat Reporting 
Battelle's ThreatSEQ solution provides easy-to-understand reports that flag the specific sequences of concern and characterize the potential hazard associated with the sequence. The reports allow reviewers to easily determine the threat level presented by the requested sequence and understand the rationale behind the threat determination.  

Reviewers can run reports of order history and threat status for easy tracking and auditing of screening results.

Quality Assurance

The Quality Assurance Unit (QAU) at Battelle, located in the UK, oversees laboratories involved in agrochemical studies to ensure regulatory compliance to Good Laboratory Practice (GLP).  


QUA is an independent group that provides quality oversight for laboratories conducting research for agrochemical product registration and regulatory compliance. We work with laboratories to ensure that their quality systems fully meet the requirements of sponsors, government agencies or other regulatory authorities. Since the formation of the company, the QAU has been involved in ten government inspections for new companies, new laboratories and laboratories moving to new premises.

The landscape of marijuana use, both medicinally and recreationally, has expanded dramatically over the last decade, yet the benefits and long-term risks of marijuana are still largely unknown. Evaluating Product Characteristics and Exposure Risks
Accurately characterize tobacco, nicotine, marijuana and opioids products and evaluate how their physical and chemical properties impact human exposure risks. 

  • Product Characterization: Our state-of-the-art laboratory includes organic and inorganic analytical instruments and innovative characterization technologies for measurement of volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds (VOCs/SVOCs), heavy metals, particulates and tobacco-specific nitrosamines. 
  • Smoking Topography Studies: We use a sophisticated puff analyzer to build a precise “puff profile” for each individual smoker of tobacco-related products. Smoking topography allows us to better measure how smoking behavior impacts exposure and how products influence puff behavior.
  • Human Exposure Studies: We use biomarkers in human breath, saliva and blood to measure the exposure effects of different products on the human body. Our smoking chamber provides a controlled environment for accurate measurement of exposure levels in both direct and secondhand smoke and aerosol exposure studies of tobacco products.

Get a clear understanding of how smokers consume tobacco, marijuana and opioids, including combustible forms, and how substance use behavior is impacted by product design. Battelle brings more than 30 years of experience in characterizing liquid synthetic and biological active ingredient mixtures. We conduct controlled studies using current U.S. Environmental Protection Agency protocols and use the AgDisp™ modeling program to determine droplet size and model spray drift. Our studies are conducted under stringent quality systems for U.S. and EU product registration, including ISO, ASTM and Good Laboratory Practice (GLP). 

Battelle has two facilities where we can determine droplet size testing or design novel studies in a wind-controlled environment. Our unique facilities eliminate the need for expensive field testing for drift deposition, volatility and other applications.

Battelle uses a wide range of collectors including monofilament string, artificial foliage, rotary samplers, cascade impactors, impingers and an Aerodynamic Particle Sizer (APS 3321). Collectors can be positioned at multiple locations up to approximately 130 feet (40 meters) downwind of the sprayer. Collected samples are analyzed following established procedures and can be customized as needed.

Indoor Facility: Environmentally Controlled Wind Tunnel

Our wind tunnel is constructed inside a facility with temperature and environmental controls. The working section of the wind tunnel is 6’ x 6’ with maximum wind speeds of roughly 15 mph. The unique engineering design allows for shorter wind tunnel length and better temperature control, resulting in more accurate data.

Outdoor Facility: Ambient Breeze Tunnel
Battelle’s one-of-a-kind spray testing facility, located outside of Columbus, Ohio, is approximately 150’ long with a 20’ x 20’ cross section. The facility offers the flexibility to quickly test full-scale sprayers under a range of conditions in a wind-controlled environment. Wind speeds ranging from 2 mph up to 180 mph can be locally generated to simulate ground-based and aerial applications. We can also add simulated crop cover to the facility.

NEON Program
Battelle is completing the construction, commissioning and initial operations of the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) for the National Science Foundation (NSF). Once completed and fully functional, NEON will serve as an extremely important national asset for providing long-term ecological data to the scientific community. The NEON program will advance the ability of scientists to examine and understand the interactions between life and the environment from coast-to-coast in the United States including Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico. The 81 field sites will include a technological infrastructure that gathers information from air, water and land sensors, as well as field samples, over the course of a human generation. The vast amounts of data generated and the technical and human resources developed from NEON will help advance human understanding for decades to come.

Battelle has extensive experience with the communication of key climate change information to technical and non-technical stakeholders, such as exposure to climate-related risks, data and data products for understanding climate change, or vulnerability and adaptation needs. Understanding the range of potential impacts anticipated from climate change, and the uncertainty with climate projections and impacts, is critical to support decision-making in a wide variety of sectors such as health, energy, agriculture, water resources and transportation. 

Natural Resources and Ecosystems

As an example, Battelle has developed a conceptual methodology for climate change probabilistic risk assessment and associated adaptation tool design, using a coastal environment as an example application. The conceptual methodology incorporates hydrologic and hydraulic connectivity, sea level rise, evapotranspiration, and spatial and temporal patterns of rainfall, along with compounding non-climate stressors.

Battelle works with organizations to build their capacity to conduct scientific research and development for climate adaptation and beyond, and to apply this research to meet stakeholder needs. Contaminated Sediment Management
