Dr. Nicholas Bergman Selected NBACC Lab Director

COLUMBUS, Ohio (March 6, 2023) – The Battelle National Biodefense Institute (BNBI) is proud to announce the appointment of Dr. Nicholas H. Bergman as the new Lab Director for the National Biodefense Analysis and Countermeasures Center (NBACC).  His selection was made after a nationwide search that produced a highly qualified field of candidates.

Dr. Mark Peters, Battelle’s Executive Vice President of National Laboratory Management & Operations at Battelle and Chair of the BNBI Board of Directors, conveyed his delight in the appointment, "We have found a great leader for the NBACC mission. Dr. Bergman brings a wealth of experience at NBACC and in the biodefense and biosecurity community, as well as unparalleled scientific credentials. The BNBI Board is excited for the future of NBACC and the partnership with the DHS, FBI, Dr. Bergman, NBACC leadership team, and NBACC staff."    

Dr. Bergman expressed his excitement about taking on the leadership role, saying, “NBACC plays a critical role in our nation's biodefense, providing the scientific data necessary to prepare our country for biological threats and the bioforensic capabilities to respond to them.  We have an outstanding staff working to ensure our country is safe, and I'm both honored and thrilled to be selected to lead them as we meet whatever challenges the future might bring.”

Dr. Bergman has been serving as the acting BNBI President and NBACC Laboratory Director since August.  Prior to taking on the acting position he was the Associate Lab Director for NBACC’s National Bioforensic Analysis Center.  Dr. Bergman began his tenure at NBACC in 2009 by founding its genomics department.  He holds a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

BNBI has operated and managed the NBACC for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Science and Technology Directorate as a Federally Funded Research and Development Center since 2006.  BNBI is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Battelle.
