Battelle is bringing transformative new neurotherapies to patients with neurological damage or degenerative diseases.
Easing Phantom Pain with Neurostimulation
Battelle co-developed a nerve-stimulating device with Neuros Medical in order to help amputees with phantom limb pain. The device uses a pacemaker-sized generator and an electrode to stimulate nerves in order to block chronic pain. We helped Neuros Medical translate their research into a practical device solution and prepare for clinical trials and manufacturing—under very aggressive time and budget constraints. The neurostimulation devices may also have applications for other chronic pain conditions, such as migraine headaches or post-surgical pain.
BrainGate Neural Interface System
BrainGate was a proprietary, investigational brain-computer interface (BCI) that consisted of an internal sensor to detect brain cell activity and external processors that convert these brain signals into a computer-mediated output under the person's own control. The sensor was a tiny silicon chip about the size of a baby aspirin with 100 electrodes, each thinner than a human hair, that can detect the electrical activity of neurons. The sensor was implanted on the surface of the area of the brain responsible for movement, the motor cortex. The sensor picked up signals related to movement intentions and transmitted them to computers, signal processors and monitors that enable study participants to control devices driven by their neural output. Battelle worked on this project with Cyberkinetics Neurotechnology Systems Inc.
Generating Noninvasive 2-D Images of Peripheral Nerves
Battelle and Nervonix worked on a technology to generate noninvasive 2-D images of peripheral nerves. The images help identify the location of nerves, providing the basis for pain diagnosis and management by anesthesiologists, surgeons and other clinicians.
