Battelle is bringing transformative new neurotherapies to patients with neurological damage or degenerative diseases.
Easing Phantom Pain with Neurostimulation
Battelle co-developed a nerve-stimulating device with Neuros Medical in order to help amputees with phantom limb pain. The device uses a pacemaker-sized generator and an electrode to stimulate nerves in order to block chronic pain. We helped Neuros Medical translate their research into a practical device solution and prepare for clinical trials and manufacturing—under very aggressive time and budget contraints. The neurostimulation devices may also have applications for other chronic pain conditions, such as migraine headaches or post-surgical pain.
Developing Closed-Loop Deep Brain Stimulation for Parkinson’s and Essential Tremor
Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) can help calm uncontrolled shaking for patients with Parkinson’s disease or essential tremor. But current “open-loop” systems, which are adjusted manually, can have side effects or cause symptoms to worsen over time. Our client wanted to develop a “closed-loop” system which adjusts automatically and would also require less power and cause fewer side effects. We helped develop the algorithms they needed to recognize and interpret neural signals and automatically adjust the stimulation levels.
