Protection for Vehicles We're analyzing and developing solutions to these cyber threats.

Vehicle Cyber Security

Battelle is helping industry and government analyze and develop solutions to vehicle cyber security threats through hardware and software vulnerability discovery, reverse engineering, cyber forensics and specialized tools and facilities.

Today’s vehicles have more computing power and communication links than a smartphone, laptop and even a small aircraft. Yet their communications architecture, protocols, software practices and hardware network design were never intended to face the internet, nor provide a robust control plane in a potentially hostile environment.

As the automotive industry offers increasingly feature-rich in-car communications, more hackers will be motivated to develop attacks and exploitation tools – similar to what we have witnessed in the smart phone industry over the past several years. Recently demonstrated and published attacks against consumer vehicles have highlighted potential risks.

Additionally, Battelle, in partnership with SAE, provides a collaborative environment where auto manufacturers, cyber specialists, government staff and students come together to exchange concepts, ideas, and solutions through the annual SAE Battelle CyberAuto Challenge™. Participants include auto manufacturers, Tier 1 suppliers, universities, DOT/NHTSA and other government representatives.

Battelle advocates community discussion of the pending problem, and creates products and services to protect vehicles and improve design. Our work is followed by recognized sources, we present at leading conferences, serve on government and industry boards and panels, and advise automobile manufacturers and suppliers on cyber security requirements.

In an increasingly connected world, the opportunities for malicious attacks will increase as well. Battelle applies cyber defense and connected vehicle expertise to keep drivers safe and reduce manufacturer liability.
