COLUMBUS, OH., 10 January, 2011—Battelle, a world leader in research and development, has teamed with the Department of Mechanical Engineering at one of America’s premier science and technology universities, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), to create a new postdoctoral associate program.
Battelle’s National Security Global Business (NSGB) will sponsor the MIT/Battelle Postdoctoral Associate Program in MIT’s Department of Mechanical Engineering. Between two and four postdoctoral students will pursue research in fields of importance to both Battelle and its national security clients. The first postdoctoral associates will start in July of 2011.
“This program is valuable for many reasons, not the least of which is that it addresses both present and future needs,” said Steve Kelly, President of Battelle’s NSGB. “The work of these postdoctoral researchers will have immediate applications, and developing these types of workers is important to Battelle’s future.”
Dr. Robert Carnes, the NSGB Director of Internal R&D, said Battelle and MIT have been working together on different projects for longer than four years.“This program is about pushing the envelope in science and engineering to produce technologies that enhance the security of our citizens and materially improve the quality of life beyond our national boundaries,” Carnes said. “Projects contemplated include new self-organizing materials, advanced robotics, and dramatically new design tools that speed the rate-of-advance of new technologies.”
Mary Boyce, Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, MIT, said, “In mechanical engineering, a postdoctoral experience has become an important professional experience prior to pursuing a research-focused high technology career in university, national laboratory, or industry settings. The Battelle Fellowships enable newly minted PhDs to pursue innovative research avenues that will expand their portfolios and make significant technical contributions. We are pleased that Battelle has partnered with the MIT Department of Mechanical Engineering to provide this opportunity for a transformative postdoctoral experience for talented PhDs who want to make their mark on bringing innovative engineering solutions to problems that will impact our nation and the world.”
Carnes said the new program could take on a life of its own because Battelle and MIT have agreed to reinvest a portion of the intellectual property generated from the postdoctoral candidates’ research. “While our investment is modest, for the first year, we hope to grow this program as we mature the relationship,” Carnes said. “I expect that if we are successful, at some point, the program will become self-sustaining.”
Both MIT and its home of Cambridge have a proven track record of developing technology start-ups, venture capital firms and other large industrial companies ranging from defense to biotech—fields of great importance to Battelle.
As the world’s largest independent research and development organization, Battelle provides innovative solutions to the world’s most pressing needs through its four global businesses: Laboratory Management; National Security; Health and Life Sciences; and Energy, Environment and Material Sciences. It advances scientific discovery and application by conducting $6.2 billion in global R&D annually through contract research, laboratory management and technology commercialization.
Headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, Battelle oversees 22,000 employees in more than 130 locations worldwide, including eight national laboratories for which Battelle has a significant management role on behalf of the U.S. Department of Energy, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and the United Kingdom.
Battelle also is one of the nation’s leading charitable trusts focusing on societal and economic impact and actively supporting and promoting science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education.
