Battelle Joins Heavy Hitters at American Oil Chemist Society Annual Meeting

Posted on Apr 30, 2012

COLUMBUS, OH., 30 April, 2012 - Make no mistake: the science and business dynamics driving the global fats and oils industries are a big deal.

More than 1,600 people from 60 countries are gathering in Long Beach, California April 29-May 2 for the 103rd Annual American Oil Chemists Society’s annual meeting where they are discussing topics ranging from cocoa butter to biodiesel fuel.

Battelle will showcase its technical capabilities and thought leadership on bio-based chemicals development, microencapsulation technology, a unique worldwide detergent and cleaner testing program, and environmental sustainability.

AOCS (American Oil Chemists' Society) is a global scientific society open to all individuals and corporations who are interested in fats, oils, surfactants, detergents and related materials. Founded in 1909, AOCS is a trusted source of information for its 4,500 members and thousands of non-members from more than 90 countries worldwide

Bhima Vijayendran, recently retired as a senior research leader at Battelle, has more than 75 patents and 50 technical papers to his credit. He will address a section of the Society devoted to Industrial Oil Products talking of current trends and the future of research in the oleochemical arena.

Vijayendran will share experiences of Battelle’s research: What the organization has done, how it has advanced oleochemical research, commercialization efforts, current challenges and the future outlook on this market.

“The future of oleochemicals is very bright when compared to general biomass research,” Vijayendran said. “Advancements in other areas will happen, but they will take a little longer.”

Vijayendran is a one of the world’s leading recognized authorities on specialty chemical and polymer systems for a wide range of applications. His numerous inventions and new products/processes to his credit include the fields of colloid, polymer and surface chemistry; adhesives and adhesion; recycling of plastics and paper; and interfacial phenomenon, specialty coatings, composites, water-based emulsions, synthetic and natural water soluble polymers. He's been involved with projects that have won six R&D 100 Awards and was Battelle's Inventor of the Year in 2004.
