Voters Want Competence, Cooperation and Reform from Government

New Analysis of Election Data Highlights Need to Understand Economic Impact of Policy

WASHINGTON, D.C., Nov. 18, 2014 – American voters want competence, cooperation and reform from government officials, according to an analysis of exit poll data from the recent midterm elections by Clarus Research Group, a leading public opinion firm.

Clarus President Ron Faucheux, PhD., and author of Lunchtime Politics shared insights from the analysis today at a special Breakfast Politics event, Unlocking the Economic and Political Factors that Will Drive the 114th Congress.

The event was sponsored by Qorvis MSLGROUP and Battelle, the world’s leading independent research and development nonprofit. Other speakers included Simon Tripp, Senior Director of Battelle Technology Partnership Practice; Kenneth Lisaius, Senior Vice President of Communications, Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO); and Carrie Wolinetz, President of United for Medical Research (UMR) and Deputy Vice President for Federal Relations with the Association of American Universities.

“There is a sense that things are not going so well, at home and abroad; that America is losing its way and its global competitiveness,” Faucheux said. “Despite signs of improved economic conditions, voters aren’t buying it. The economy remains the top issue.”

Getting Congress and the President to compromise on policy issues will require a deeper understanding of the economic impact, not just the political impact, the speakers agreed.

“Evaluating the economic impact of particular policies, independent of politics, is immensely valuable,” Wolinetz said.

Battelle’s study of the Human Genome Project (HGP) for instance, found that a $3.8 billion investment by the U.S. Government over 15 years spurred $796 billion in economic impact, including 310,000 jobs.
